Our group was formed in 2016 and we meet monthly for 2 hours on the first Wednesday of the month. We are all active researchers outside of the meetings and enjoy the challenge and the satisfaction of discovering our family histories. Our meetings are run on a ‘round table’ principle, so that everyone has the chance to speak, to hear of each other’s successes and failures and to chip in with offers of help, suggestions or just sympathy. We are all interested in the lives of our ancestors far beyond adding new names, and life events to a family tree. It can be like ‘Who Do You Think You Are’ on TV. The finding out is part of the fun. We have a range of knowledge, skills, and experience which we share both at and outside of meetings. And within the group we have our own specialisms, which have developed naturally from our researches. These may be geographic such as Ireland or India, or topic related such as military history, the Industrial revolution, emigration from and immigration to the UK. We meet in a member’s home and although our model enables all members at a meeting to share the highs and lows of their current researches, it does leave our numbers limited by time and space. We have a low turnover and though currently we don’t have room for more members, we would be happy share the resources of the group to help others in their researches or whose who would like to set up another group like ours.
