Ashtead

Welcome

A message from our Chairman outgoing Chairman Tim Collett

Bob Hope once said 'Thanks for the Memory', so it’s sobering to think that I am now 3 years older than I was when you kindly elected me as Chairman. It feels so old having to admit that one has finally become an Octogenarian, 80 years plus, so I take consolation from thinking it’s only 68 plus vat.
I spoke to a lady earlier and asked 'What should my speech be about?; - less than one minute she replied!
I have been inspired by the energy and enthusiasm of our Members - from history groups, walking and languages and ethnic dining, we embody the learn, laugh live motto everyday.
Serving as your Chairman has been an honour and privilege and I want to to extend my heartfelt thanks to the entire committee past and present for their unwavering support, hardwork, dedication plus all the leaders and volunteers.
Most importantly, a big thank you to all the members, whose participation, ideas and camaraderie are what truly make this community so vibrant.
So it is with a huge amount of sadness, not to mention relief and appreciation that I prepare to handover the reins of chairing Ashtead u3a for the next 3 years to Marianne Fletcher. New leadership brings new ideas, which is vital for any organisation to thrive. She will I predict make an even better Chairman or in unisex times Chairperson, than her brilliant and modest predecessor, and  wish her and the committee all the very best for the future .
So it just remains for me to say 'Cheerio, thanks for the memory', and here’s to many more years of learning, laughter and living.

Greetings from our new Chair Marianne Fletcher

Ashtead u3a offers a wide range of creative, learning, physical and leisure activities, all organised and run by members, who have between them a wide range of experience and expertise. Have you always wanted to explore London or see how artistic you can be? We have Groups for that and so much more! With nearly 70 groups to choose from, you are bound to find something to suit your interests. If you are keen to pursue a subject/activity we don't already have a group for, just mention it to our Groups Co-ordinator and we’ll put the idea to our members – many current groups began that way.

Apart from exploring topics of interest learning or gaining new skills, a huge benefit of u3a is meeting new people and making friends. We hold a sociable monthly meeting in the Ashtead Peace Memorial Hall, usually on the first Thursday of the month. There is always an outside speaker on sometimes surprising topics, the chance to buy tickets for outings/events and of course time for a cup of tea and a chat. u3a Membership also gives you the opportunity to attend Study Days run by the Surrey u3a Network eight times a year. They cover a variety of subjects, lead by experts in the field, and are held locally in the Menuhin Hall, Stoke d’Abernon.

A browse through the following pages of this website will show you what we have to offer. If you would like to find out more, our Membership Secretary will be pleased to help you. She can be contacted by email on Membership.

New Members If you are no longer in full-time employment, you can join Ashtead u3a. Our membership year runs from 1st October to 30th September, and is only £12. This includes access to all Monthly Meetings, all study and activity groups, and a subscription to the u3a magazine called "u3amatters". You can join the monthly meeting as a visitor - please contact Membership beforehand. You can download the Membership application form by clicking on the 'Join Us' button. If you are already a member of another u3a then you can join our group as an Associate upon presentation of your current membership card. We look forward to meeting you!
