Blair and Brown - The Rivals

Event type: Meeting
Date: Thursday 4th September 2025
Time: 2:00 pm
Venue: Ashtead Peace Memorial Hall

Andrew Baker, a fluent, engaging and entertaining speaker, will talk about Tony Blair and Gordon Brown. They were at the heart of the Labour Government which held power in Britain between 1997 and 2010.  They had been the closest of friends but with the unexpected death of Labour Leader, John Smith, in 1994, friendships turned over time to the most bitter rivalry.  Come to hear this compelling  human story of how two of the most able political figures of their generation came together, how they shaped the New Labour Vision; how they worked together in government while sometimes pulling in opposite directions; how their personal  relationships became so bitter and acrimonious off public stage and how their common vision crumbled.

It is a story  of two very different personalities - the first a brilliant communicator, wanting to appeal far beyond Labour's traditional class base, the second a formidable  intellectual at war with poverty and disadvantage but given also to conspiracy and characterised  by searing contempt, pride and ruthless ambition.  You need no interest in politics to be moved by  this tense personal drama.  Don't miss it.

Andrew has had a particular interest in the social, cultural and political changes that have happened at home and abroad since the First World War and the ideas and forces which have shaped today’s world. He gives his audiences insights into the times through which they have lived and has a sharp eye for detail and anecdote.

Note - this is a change to the previously advertised talk about Nelson and Trafalgar due to unforeseen circumstances.
