Dr. Helen Naylor will talk about the history of protest, which goes back centuries. We examine what makes effective protest as we review marches, demonstrations and disruption from the medieval Great Rising to the Suffragettes and the early 1900s through to Extinction Rebellion and Just Stop Oil. What can we learn from history about the outcome of protest? Do certain methods work more than others? Is violent activism ever justified?
